Trump and Putin joke about election interference at G20 summit

Why is President Trump so afraid of raising the issue of election interference with Putin?

The Mueller report unambiguously concluded that Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election occurred “in sweeping and systematic fashion” and “violated U.S. criminal law”. Several other American agencies have concurred, including the FBI, CIA, the NSA, Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security.

Yet, this is what happened on Wednesday:

Reporter: “Mr. President, will you speak to Russian president Vladimir Putin on not interfering in our elections?”
Trump: “I’ll have a very good conversation with him. What I say to him is none of your business.”

The same happened a few weeks ago, when Trump was asked about his upcoming meeting.

Yesterday, Trump was asked again in front of Putin.

This time he just joked about it. “Yes, of course I will,” he said.

Then he turned to Putin, smiling and wagging his finger in the Russian president’s direction at one point, and said: “Don’t meddle in the election, president. Don’t meddle in the election.”

Afterwards, a readout from the White House on their meeting did not mention the subject at all.
