‘Denmark offers to buy U.S.’ The funniest responses to Trump’s absurd offer to buy Greenland

The entire “I want to buy Greenland” story is a fodder for the satirists and comedians, bringing again the question:  “Is Satire Possible in the Age of Trump?”

Just check those hilarious headlines that “make sense” in the warped reality the United States descended into following the 2016 elections.

Denmark offers to buy U.S: “We believe that, by giving the U.S. an educational system and national health care, it could be transformed from a vast land mass into a great nation,” the spokesperson said. (The New Yorker)

Trump’s evident egomania and narcissism, which seems to only get worse over time, games America’s political system so that satire cannot function correctly.

In a “normal” society satire not only speaks truth to power, but also serves as a mirror for the societies that enabled that power to move into place.

Satire is a tool of self-reflection, but Trump — and his cult followers — seem incapable of doing this.  This is leaving the rest of America in shocked disbelief at a base that continues to back him despite his increasingly bizarre and indefensible behavior.

Unfortunately for the world, Trump is not a stand-up comedian. He actually is the POTUS, perhaps best described in the Greenland’s affair context by Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN):

A top White House economic adviser maintained Sunday that the Trump administration is still “looking at” buying Greenland. But the Danish prime minister can only respond in baffled disbelief, “I strongly hope that this is not meant seriously.”

“The US president’s interest, reported earlier this week, was greeted internationally with widespread hilarity but with indignation in Greenland and Denmark.

The government of the semi-autonomous Danish territory insisted it was not for sale. The Danish prime minister called any discussion of a sale “absurd”.

Nonetheless, on Sunday White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow first confirmed the story….

Trump”s entire presidency has been a theater of the absurd.

UPDATE: 08/21/2019 - Yes, that story has a follow up. Even more absurd -
