Trump mocked by his former Defense Secretary: ‘I earned my spurs on the battlefield’

10/18/2019 6:17 am ET Wojtek Wacowski

President Donald Trump this week called his former Defense Secretary James Mattis an “overrated” general.

Keep in mind that General Mattis was described by the Atlantic as, “perhaps the most revered living marine” in the United States today. He was once the supreme allied commander in charge of NATO transformation.

So Mattis wasn’t perturbed by Trump’s dig at him. He owned it.

“I’m not just an overrated general. I am the greatest, the world’s most overrated,” Mattis said Thursday at the Al Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner in New York.

“I’m honored to be considered that by Donald Trump, because he also called Meryl Streep an overrated actress,” Mattis continued to laughter from the audience.

“So, I’m the Meryl Streep of generals and frankly that sounds pretty good to me, and you do have to admit between me and Meryl, at least we’ve had some victories.”

General Mattis’ commentary provides a great opportunity to recall Meryl Streep’s hilarious impersonation of Donald Trump during a performance in New York City in June 2016.

The then 66-year-old actress transformed herself into Trump to give a parody performance like no other.
