Trump rallied hard to get Governor Bevin reelected in Kentucky. He even warned his fans that a Beshear win would send a “really bad message.” Yet, now he is trying to spin Bevin’s loss into a win for Mitch McConnell?

McConnell is notoriously unpopular in the state of Kentucky—and in the rest of the country. A point that people were quick to point out:

The down-ballot Republicans fared much better than Bevin, which may be what Trump is alluding to in his tweet for Mitch. Brad Parscale, Trump’s 2020 campaign manager, is surely trying to count those elections as wins for Trump. Parscale claims “President Trump’s rally helped five of six Kentucky Republicans win clear statewide victories.”
In the 2016 election, Trump took Kentucky by 30 points. Yet, he couldn’t rally enough support in the state to get his man elected. Former GOP Rep Joe Scarborough pointed out that Bevin was actually ahead by 5% points before Trump came to town, “Donald Trump cost him five and a half-six percentage points by that one rally. ”
The people are rejecting Trump’s brand of ugliness and hate. By flipping him off on the road, booing in arenas, running for office, and by casting their vote.

With his already low approval rating, McConnell is probably wishing for a little less public support from Trump.
