Representative Pete King (R-NY) announced on Monday that he will not be seeking reelection. King is the twentieth House Republican to announce retirement at the end of his term.

More and more Republicans realize that being on the same ballot as Donald Trump is a losing proposition.  The DCCC says they are playing to win in New York’s 2nd congressional district and Pete King may realize his race could be a tough one to win in this political environment.

King has held his seat since 1992. In his statement, he said it was time for him to step down and “end the weekly commute” he has been making for 28 years. He will miss the thrill of the campaign trail, however:

“Politically I will miss the energy and dynamism of a re-election campaign especially since my polling numbers are as strong as they have ever been and I have more than $1 million in campaign funds,”

The congressman also stated that he would be supporting Trump’s 2020 bid for reelection before he goes. In addition, he will be voting against impeachment.
