On Thursday, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) slammed Republicans and the Trump administration for cutting food-stamps even further, saying it affected families just like hers.
Critics fear that cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will push already struggling families to starvation.
Ocasio-Cortez called the GOP’s move “shameful” on Twitter, sharing a personal story about her own family and her humble upbringing.
“My family relied on food stamps (EBT) when my dad died at 48. I was a student. If this happened then, we might’ve just starved.”

Her frank admission caused others on Twitter to share their own personal stories about times they relied upon assistance in order to have food to eat.
my wife has Parkinson’s — during issues with medical insurance, we needed EBT (not currently on) — this is truly a hateful treatment of those simply trying to feed family members brought to us by the ‘pro life’ crowd.

Parents divorced when I was 13. Dad lost his job and couldn’t pay child support. Mom had never worked and had four kids at home. We had to get food stamps for about a year until Mom got some training at local community college and a job. That help kept us from drowning.
