Before the trial even begins Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell and the vast majority of Senate Republicans have indicated their support for Trump regardless of what evidence is presented and how the trial actually plays out.
That effectively undercuts their credibility as the equivalent of jurors in a trial and ultimately undermines Congress as a co-equal branch of government responsible for being a check and a balance on the Executive and Judiciary branches.

For the first time in American history, an impeached President will face a Senate trial during an election year.
Welcome Back to FrontPageLive.com, I’m Carl Cameron. On this day, exactly one week before Christmas 2019, Trump becomes the third impeached President in 243 years. Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1998 were both impeached by the House and then acquitted by the Senate and not removed from office. Richard Nixon resigned to avoid being impeached in 1974.
Trump’s impeachment in the House has been a foregone conclusion for months. Minority Republicans focused their objections on the process not the facts and evidence.
“We are very violently opposed to the process, very strongly opposed to the rule, think this is a charade, and been very unfair.”
Majority House Democrats cast impeachment as protecting the integrity of the Office of the Presidency, the Constitution, and our votes!
“No one should be allowed to use the power of the presidency to undermine our elections, period. This isn’t about siding with your team.”
The next step following impeachment is the Senate trial next year to remove Trump from office.
Despite Senate Impeachment Rules that require all Senators to swear an oath saying quote, “I solemnly swear (or affirm, as the case may be) that in all things appertaining to the trial of the impeachment of Donald J. Trump, now pending, I will do impartial justice according to the Constitution and laws: So help me God.’’
