On Thursday the House of Representatives passed a vote to stop President Trump from taking additional military action against Iran without congressional authority.

Although the vote was largely by party lines, key GOP lawmakers supported the bill.

Why it matters

The vote was won by 224 to 194, and included GOP Reps. Matt Gaetz and Francis Rooney of Florida, as well as Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky.

Gaetz’s vote was significant because he is a close Trump ally who publicly defended the strike on Soleimani. Indeed Fox News host Tucker Carlson called Gaetz perhaps the President’s “single closest ally” in the House.

Gaetz told reporters:

“I support the president. Killing Soleimani was the right decision. But engaging in another forever war in the Middle East would be the wrong decision.”

Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) said the bill aims to “remind everybody that we should be debating things like war and peace and we should be following the Constitution.”

In other words, even if they supported the drone strike, the wider decision to go to war should have Congressional support.

The bill instructed Trump to: “terminate the use of United States Armed Forces to engage in hostilities in or against Iran or any part of its government or military” unless Congress declares war or there is “an imminent armed attack upon the United States.”
