‘I swore to protect’: Red-state Democrat Doug Jones votes to convict and remove Trump

Doug Jones, current Democratic senator of Alabama, is standing up to Trump’s crimes … whether it hurts his chances of reelection or not.

“After many sleepless nights,” Doug Jones concluded that there is enough evidence to convict President Trump for both the abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

“Senators are elected to make tough choices. We are required to study the facts of each issue before us and exercise our independent judgment in keeping with the oaths we take. The gravity of this moment, the seriousness of the charges, and the implications for future presidencies and Congresses all contributed to the difficulty with which I have arrived at my decision,” Jones said.

In his speech to the Senate, the Alabama Democrat verbally took shots at his fellow colleagues on both sides over how they have handled the impeachment saga. “Candidly, to my colleagues on both sides of the aisle, I fear that moral courage, country before party, is a rare commodity these days,” Jones stated.

Jones faces a serious uphill battle for reelection, especially in a deep red state like Alabama. Republicans immediately reacted to his decision and deemed it fatal for his chances of reelection. But Jones’s reaction wasn’t surprising, as he shrugged off the backlash telling reporters that the political fallout doesn’t affect how he feels.

It was bold of Jones to release this statement. Especially after his masterful win against Roy Moore in 2017. Let’s hope that the people of Alabama can stand by his decision.
