Demonstrating a remarkable lack of self-awareness, Senator Ted Cruz tweeted out criticism of a bill that seeks to limit reproductive rights…by mandating vasectomies for certain men.

The bill from Alabama State Representative Rhonda Hollis comes after an abortion ban AL approved last year, which is currently being blocked by the courts. Called “the most far-reaching anti-abortion measure passed by state lawmakers” in 2019 by the New York Times, that law forbade abortion even in cases of rape and incest.

Hollis’s tongue-in-cheek bill calls for vasectomies on men either after their third child or after they turned 50, whichever comes first.

Twitter users had a lot of feelings about Cruz’s apparent inability to understand irony.

Some ran with it:

Yeah Ted, what kind of jerk would deem it necessary to have the government step in to dictate what people do with their private parts?

damn, it really sucks when the government interferes with your bodily autonomy and reproductive choice. as a woman, i can’t imagine what that must feel like.

Others tried their best to explain it to him:

This bill was not meant to pass; it was introduced to demonstrate how wrong it is to restrict people’s reproductive rights. In other words, the argument you’re applying to this bill shows how your own views on women’s reproductive rights are indefensible!
