Republican politicians are blaming Democrats’ focus on climate issues for the failure of a coronavirus bailout package as lawmakers battle over national virus relief and economic stimulation, according to the Hill.

The Senate failed for a second time on Monday to reach agreement on the $1.6 trillion-plus plan, and both Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Senate Environment and Public Works Chairman John Barrasso (R-WY) specifically blamed Democrats’ focus on pushing through elements of the Green New Deal for the vote failure.

No specific proposals from the Green New Deal are included in the stimulus package, and Democrats say that they are more concerned with preventing unfair corporate bailouts and providing enough relief for Americans.

“I keep hearing about the House wanting a Green New Deal as part of this emergency package. That’s a total red herring,” Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) told The Hill. “There’s no Green New Deal in this thing, so let’s get real.”
