Once you are in line to vote on Election Day, keep your place. There may be a long wait, but if you leave the line, you may not be allowed to vote.
“If the polls close while you’re still in line, stay in line – you have the right to vote,” reports the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Many voters are in and out in just a few minutes, but some polling places will have longer lines. Also, don’t let anyone intimidate you! You have a RIGHT to vote. If you are feeling threatened, call the Election Protection Hotline (866-687-8683).
One way to avoid waiting in line to vote may be to vote early. Forty one states as well as Washington, DC will allow voters to vote early, in person. As misinformation circulates about absentee ballots, early in-person voting is also a way to be sure your vote is counted.
Whenever you go to vote, bring a snack and something to read, or whatever will keep you energized to wait.
