Donald Trump is ramping up calls for voter ID laws at rallies and on Twitter.
Despite widespread evidence to the contrary, Trump resurfaced an old claim that fraud cost him votes in 2016. But he’s never provided any proof.
Days before a recent New Hampshire rally, Trump tweeted that no other election protection measures should go forward without voter ID laws in place.
No debate on Election Security should go forward without first agreeing that Voter ID (Identification) must play a very strong part in any final agreement. Without Voter ID, it is all so meaningless!

But it’s well documented that voter ID laws lower voter turnout and are discriminatory-more often impacting low-income Americans, people of color, the elderly, and people with disabilities, who face obstacles to getting IDs, according to this ACLU fact sheet.
In 2017, President Trump created a commission to study voter fraud but soon abandoned it-though he didn’t admit that no evidence could be found.
The day after Trump’s tweet, Bernie Sanders called the president a “coward,” who couldn’t win fairly and was trying to suppress the vote.
