The state of Georgia has been embroiled in several voter scandals in recent years. However, due to a new law that automatically registers voters, more than 300,000 people have been added to the rolls—a high percentage of them young and non-white.
Under the new law, licensed drivers are automatically registered to vote unless they opt out. This new legislation has added 310,000 voters in 2019 with 47% of them being POC and 45% being under 30.
11 huge spoke with Charity Belusel, one of those newly-licensed and newly-registered voters. She said, “I wasn’t aware that it was automatically submitted” when told about the new process. She added, “Oh, I’m going to vote.”
Democrats in the state are hopeful the influx of people on the rolls will help them win upcoming elections due to the demographics of the added voters. State Representative Bee Nguyen (D-ATL) talks about the Democrat’s excitement, “we know those electorates tend to vote Democratic.”
The Republicans in Georgia aren’t giving up hope though, the state has consistently voted red since 2006.
However, Democrat Stacey Abrams only lost the governor’s race in 2018 by 55,000 votes, so they would be right to be a little bit nervous.
