George Conway has banded with a group of other Republicans to launch a super PAC with the goal of fighting President Trump’s re-election campaign.
George Conway is the husband of Kellyanne Conway, Trump’s former top campaign advisor, now counsel to the president.
The Lincoln Project is a group of “dedicated Americans protecting democracy.” Its goal is to hold “accountable those who would violate their oaths to the Constitution.”
NBC News calls the group a “formal step forward for the so-called Never Trump movement.”
The Project has already reported more than $1 million in fundraising commitments which they plan to use on an advertising campaign in the battleground states. The hope is that the Lincoln Project’s efforts will get people to turn away from Trump:
“Defeat President Trump and Trumpism at the ballot box.”
The PAC will work to block not only Trump’s re-election but also target the Senate candidates that are known Trump allies.
Who’s in the Group
The advisory board for The Lincoln Project consists of seven members—all vocal critics of President Trump. It includes
- George Conway, conservative attorney and husband to Kellyanne Conway
- Steve Schmidt, former adviser to Senator John McCain
- John Weaver, former adviser to Ohio Governor John Kasich
- Jennifer Horn, former New Hampshire GOP chair
- Rick Wilson, Republican political strategies
Conway encouraged Anonymous, the Trump official who authored the expose A Warning, to join their fight.
“I think the more the merrier, and I hope maybe he—he or she, I don’t know who Anonymous is—will come out someday and join the effort. Because everyone who believes as we do that Donald Trump is a cancer on the presidency and on the Constitution needs to help and join this effort.”
The PAC is looking to persuade those Republican voters, like women and the college-educated, that are unhappy with Trump’s GOP and push them to vote for other candidates, including Democrats, in 2020.
