Federal regulators Thursday approved a controversial pipeline and gas terminal project in Oregon, setting the stage for a potential battle with the state.

Last month, Oregon denied key permits for the Jordan Cove LNG pipeline and terminal, saying that the project would negatively impact the environment and key industries, but the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission gave federal approval for the project in a 2-1 vote Thursday.

Democratic Governor Kate Brown has threatened to go to court if the project moves forward without adequate state permits.
