British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell is in custody and faces charges for aiding the late American financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in child sex trafficking from 1994-1997.

People want answers to the sex trafficking saga and thousands are currently searching one thing on google: “Who is Ghislaine Maxwell?”

The FBI arrested Maxwell Thursday morning in Bradford, New Hampshire. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York hosted a press conference on Thursday at 12 p.m. EST.

According to the FBI, Maxwell had both a personal and professional relationship with Epstein who hanged himself on Aug.19, 2019 at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Lower Manhattan while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. She was among his closest confidants. Maxwell’s role was helping Epstein exploit girls who were as young as 14 years old. “Maxwell played a critical role in this abuse,” acting U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss said during the press conference.

Maxwell, according to the FBI, pretended to be the person Epstein’s young victims could trust.

“Maxwell enticed minor girls, got them to trust her, then delivered them into the trap that she and Epstein had set for them,” Strauss said. “Today, after many years, Maxwell finally stands charged for her role in these crimes.”

Maria Farmer, one of Epstein’s accusers, told The Guardian in 2019 her account that answers the question who is Ghislaine Maxwell. “Ghislaine was key in making [her] feel safe.”

Farmer continued:

I trusted her because she is a woman. She would make us trust her, she would make us really care about her. My sister even said that she would feel so special if Ghislaine paid attention to her because she had that way about her, you know, the popular girl in school, she was one of those. She knew everybody. (Her voice cracked). She was so dangerous.

Farmer says Maxwell would do anything to get what she wants, “and all of it for her is about power and money.”

The FBI had been tracking Maxwell while she continued to live a privileged life over the past thirty years. “We have been discreetly keeping tabs on Maxwell for some time,” FBI Special Agent William Sweeney said. “She slithered away to a gorgeous property in New Hampshire, continuing to live a life of privilege while her victims continue to live with the trauma inflicted on them years earlier.”

The FBI expressed during the Maxwell press conference that although they were talking about something that happened 30 years ago, it continues to be fresh trauma for the victims.
