At a North Carolina rally on Saturday, Trump said he is “counting” on the federal courts to call the election on November 3rd, which is why he plans to nominate someone to fill Justice Ginsburg’s seat “next week.”
Now we’re counting on the federal court system to make it so that we can actually have an evening where we know who wins. Not where the votes are going to be counted a week later or two weeks later.
Trump’s plan to call it on election night isn’t viable. Several states will not even have all of their mail-in votes collected by election night. For instance, Pennsylvania’s deadline is on the Friday following the election. In Illinois, the votes have to be postmarked by the 3rd but will continue to be collected until Nov. 17.
