A grand jury yesterday indicted one of the three officers involved in the killing of Breonna Taylor in her apartment more than six months ago.

Neither officer who shot Taylor was indicted. All three officers are white. The officer who was indicted was charged with wanton endangerment for firing shots that went through a neighboring apartment occupied by white people, according to a lawyer for Taylor’s family. Protests began almost immediately across the country in response to the announcement.

In an interview with PBS NewsHour, professor Paul Butler of Georgetown Law School called the grand jury’s outcome “a legal, prosecutorial way of saying that Black lives don’t matter… It’s against the law to do what they did, in my opinion. And yet these officers are now above the law.”
