The Silverado and Blue Ridge Fires continue to rip across Orange County, California, burning nearly 30,000 acres in less than 48 hours.
Mandatory evacuations orders are in place for about 70,000 residents. Smoke and ash from those fires, along with other nearly-extinguished blazes in neighboring counties, blanketed Southern California with the worst air quality in the country Tuesday. The fires also forced Orange County officials to close four ballot drop boxes.
California’s wildfires, made worse by human caused climate change, have already burned a record-shattering more than 4 million acres and killed 31 people directly, and thousands indirectly, this year.
