“Evermore people today have the means to live, but no meaning to live for.” — Victor Frankl
On November 8, 1923, Hitler was convicted and sent to prison for his role in an unsuccessful coup in Munich, otherwise known as the Beer Hall Putsch.
He was sentenced to five years in jail but was back on the street before the year ended.
At the time, many Germans wrote him off as a nobody who would end up in the dustbin of history. Since he was out of the limelight, most people no longer worried about this seemingly ragtag group of men made up of right-wing members of the army and the Nazi party who had failed in their attempt to take over the government.
Instead of giving up, however, Hitler used his time in prison to rebrand himself. He changed how he dressed, how he spoke, his mannerisms — and he wrote Mein Kampf. He came back stronger than ever and more committed to his nefarious philosophy of making Germany great again by any means necessary.
Why is this story so important?
In 2021, the American people have a choice: we can pretend that everything is okay because Trump and his ilk are out of the spotlight, or we can use history as our guide for what we need to do to prevent Trump 2.0.
The time to organize and act was decades ago. The Republican party has been carefully constructing their false narratives for decades, and Progressive messaging has not kept up.
We have pivotal elections taking place next year, and the right-wing has been spending millions of dollars convincing voters that Progressives are a bunch of no-good socialists. They’ve mastered the art of storytelling mainly because they don’t worry about facts. And they’ve spent the time and effort to understand how to convince people that they and only they know how to take care of ordinary Americans and make us great again.
If you don’t think the GQP is already in action, flooding our information streams with disinformation preparing us for another Trump reign, then you’re not paying attention. Scions on the right are funding stealth propaganda campaigns laser-focused on disparaging the Democrats. The data show that it’s working.
The fact is we don’t have time to wait until the lead-up to an election to change hearts and minds. We need to counter the right-wing narrative NOW with an always-on-conversion storytelling approach that convinces Americans that the only thing the Republican party cares about is themselves and their wallets.
Now more than ever, we need your commitment to keeping up the fight for democracy. If not, Trump will come back stronger than ever in a new suit and a 21st-century version of Mein Kampf under his arm.
Take action now.
