‘Reflects the wisdom and moral leadership’: Praise for Biden’s decision to waive IP rights for the COVID vaccine

412,431. Yesterday, India reported more than 400k new cases of coronavirus. The country is quickly sliding into despair. Doctors and hospitals are not equipped to care for the uptick in patients who need hospitalization, and equipment and supplies are not reaching high-risk areas.

Nepal’s cases are rising as well, indicating that India’s neighbor might be in the throes of another outbreak. Brazil is a disaster zone, and there are reports that COVID cases have jumped by 70% in Iran.

As a result, the WTO moved to relax vaccine patents allowing countries to produce the vaccine themselves. Giving countries the power to make the vaccine is critical to stamping out this disease, although it will take months to create and distribute it.

Biden’s plan to support waiving intellectual property rights for the COVID vaccine is a step in the right direction. He is making a bold statement about why people, not profits, come first. Of course, big Pharma is mad about Biden’s decision, but his administration refuses to capitulate to their empty threats.

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said it best: “The White House’s support for the temporary waiving of intellectual property on COVID-19 vaccines reflects the wisdom and moral leadership of the United States to work to end this pandemic. But I am not surprised by this announcement. This is what I expected from the Administration of President Biden.”

President Biden continues to focus on rebuilding our country. His ability to see through the bullsh*t, put his head down, and get to work has conservatives working overtime on manufacturing fake news stories depicting him as a socialist. Conduct a basic Google search and read some of the right-wing stories about this administration. You’ll see the always-on propaganda machine in overdrive, painting the picture that we will live on a communist collective and no one will have any rights.

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WV) is one of the last holdouts of a party that has clearly destroyed any semblance of an ideology. Instead, you have right-wing pundits, Dan Bongino, Ben Shapiro, Mark Levin, shaping the Republican narrative for the post-truth era. They misuse the terms socialism and communism without a care in the world. They weaponize low-information voters with a constant drip of authoritarian phrases creating millions of social media trolls sullying the web with violent calls to action, outright falsehoods, misogynist rhetoric, and a refusal to accept the truth.

Despite Biden’s best efforts to unite the country, the right-wing has a head start. Without a clear ideology and no adherence to the truth, the right-wing can say and do anything they want. And they’ve been doing It for decades.

If elections were held today, I am not sure democracy would win. Trumpism has not gone away. The ex-president and his cronies have only amped up their hateful rhetoric on social media. And voters who live in areas of the U.S. without access to local newspapers are paying the price of falling hook, line, and sinker for the constant drip of propaganda hitting their news streams on and offline. Media literacy is at an all-time low, and the right-wing is taking advantage of that.

It’s time for Americans who respect the rule of law and democracy to defeat those on the right who have no respect for freedom and the U.S. Constitution. As Americans, we must fight back. There are only 185 days until the 2022 elections.

And while we need to act together to save our democracy, we also need the Biden administration to continue the Herculean task of building back better. Now that we are getting COVID under control, we can focus on growing our economy, fixing our aging infrastructure, and putting people back to work.
