Biden taps Steve Dettelbach to head ATF after senators reject first nominee

Joe Biden on the campaign trail

President Biden has nominated former U.S. Attorney Steve Dettelbach to head the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Biden’s previous pick, David Chipman, failed to win the support of three Senate Democratic Caucus members and withdrew his nomination amid attacks from Republicans and the NRA over his gun control advocacy.

The Senate has confirmed just one permanent ATF director in the last 16 years amid heavy lobbying from gun advocacy groups.
