Former GOP Congressman: Republicans forced to lie to defend Trump

Former GOP Rep. Justin Amash says Republicans forced to lie to defend Trump

A former Republican Congressman told CNN on Monday night that Republican leaders are being forced to lie to defend President Trump.

The astonishing remarks were made on CNN’s “Erin Burnett OutFront” show. Guest Congressman Justin Amash, who represents the third district of Michigan and recently left the Republican party over President Trump’s behavior, discussed the situation.

Here’s how the exchange went:

Rep. Amash: “I think anyone working in this adminstration is going to have a hard time explaining what’s going on. You’re asking a lot from these officials to go out, on stage, and try and keep the story straight.”

Erin Burnett CNN: “This is the problem, you’re basically saying these guys, people around the President, they’re forced to lie.”

Rep. Amash: “Yeah, and it’s a shame. I think they know better and I think, deep down, they wish they weren’t, you know, trapped in this position. And I hear that from my colleagues on the House floor. I hear them talk about how they wish they weren’t doing this.”

No wonder so many Republicans are heading for the exit rather than staying in Congress.

On Saturday, Florida Republican Rep. Francis Rooney said he would not run for reelection, after suggesting he was open to impeaching President Trump.

Since Trump’s inauguration, a Washington Post analysis shows, nearly 40% of Republicans in office in January 2017 have gone, are leaving or have resigned.

20 Republican representatives have said they’re retiring so far, compared to just four Democrats.
