Republicans don’t want impeachment to ruin their Christmas, but they didn’t care when they impeached Bill Clinton on December 19, 1998.

Former acting U.S. attorney general Matt Whitaker told Fox News, “And it’s really a sad day for America. It is, I think, going to, you know, hurt people’s Christmas experience, because this is going to be playing in the background. Instead of Bing Crosby’s Christmas album, we’re going to have impeachment en vogue.”

This isn’t the first time a Republican has publicly complained that Trump’s impeachment will upset their Christmas. Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich whined on Fox News, “The whole thing is a joke… And really, on the eve of Christmas, it is really sad to see the dishonesty and the partisanship that the House Democrats are displaying.”

But in 1998, Gingrich himself voted to impeach Clinton six days before Christmas. A few days after his vote, he announced his resignation, in the face of a scandal over his own extramarital affair.

Gingrich lamely tried to defend himself against potential hypocrisy, saying, “Democrats have a compulsion to lie because the truth kills them.”

Perhaps the right will see impeachment as just another move in the legendary War on Christmas.
