On early Friday morning, the Trump administration announced it had killed a top Iranian security commander with a drone strike.
Commander Major General Qassim Suleimani led the powerful Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps. He was killed along with officials from Iraqi militias backed by Tehran.
There is little doubt Suleimani was a powerful but brutal commander who worked closely with the dictator of Syria, Bashar al-Assad.
But the strike was also a serious escalation of Trump’s growing confrontation with Iran.
And it’s worth noting that Trump himself had repeatedly criticized and warned against war with Iran for electioneering.

Trump had also warned against war with Iran in a video message himself!
