Does Trump actually believe that his VP is the best pick to coordinate the country’s coronavirus response—or is he deliberately setting Pence up for failure?

Former Clinton adviser and current CNN contributor Paul Begala thinks it’s the latter. At a conference hosted by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, Begala predicted that Trump has set in motion a plan to replace Pence with Nikki Haley.

According to him, Trump chose Pence to oversee the United States’ anti-coronavirus efforts so that he could use Pence’s ineptitude as a reason to replace him. Many have already called into question Pence’s public health credentials, which include his failure to respond to an HIV outbreak in Indiana during his time as governor.

Begala put forth his theory when asked about his predictions for November. Calling the scenario a “certainty,” he even gave a date for when Trump would announce the shakeup: July 16, when the Democratic nominee will give their acceptance address. Per Begala,

“On that day, to interrupt that narrative, Donald Trump will call a press conference at Mar-a-Lago. He’s gonna dump Mike Pence and put Nikki Haley on the ticket to try to get those suburban moms. You watch. Guaranteed.”

The prediction seems far-fetched, but maybe it makes more sense than anyone actually believing that Pence is equipped to handle the challenge ahead.

Place your bets now, and tune in this summer to see if Begala got it right!
