Twitter trolls Trump’s Tweet-tantrum over 5th Ave Black Lives Matter sign

A sign saying: “Black Lives Matter” is a symbol of “hate” according to the President of the United States. Bill de Blasio, the Mayor of New York City announced a plan to paint “BLACK LIVES MATTER” in large, yellow letters down 5th Avenue in Manhattan.

Trump threw his toys out of the tweeting cot.

Characteristically, his outrage could not be contained in a single tweet. He continued in a second tweet, denouncing the BLM chants against the “GREAT Police.” He spoke out against the proposed Black Lives Matter sign, calling it a “symbol of hate” unfit for “New York’s greatest street.”

Twitter begged to differ.

On Tuesday, the New York City Council approved an $88.1 billion budget. The new budget includes cutting $1 billion from the New York Police Department. This move was approved by 32 against 17 council members.

The $1 billion will be redirected towards community projects. Half of this will be reinvested in youth centers and used to improve internet access in public housing. Overtime will be reduced, and some police functions will be taken over by better-qualified civilians. Bill de Blasio called the move “The right thing to do.”

The President has not shown such great concern over mismanaged funds before…

BLACK LIVES MATTER: ‘Symbol of hate’?

The President denounced the move to paint “Black Lives Matter” down 5th Avenue, as a “symbol of hate.” A strange choice of words for the movement which calls for racial equality and civil rights. People of all ages, backgrounds and skin colors have united in all 50 states and around the world, in largely peaceful protests, calling for an end to systemic racism and police brutality.

According to their manifesto, the Black Lives Matter movement supports:

  • a culture where each person feels seen, heard, and supported.
  • space for transgender brothers and sisters to participate and lead.
  • a space that affirms Black women and is free from sexism, misogyny, and environments in which men are centered.

They are “family-friendly,” and call for “justice, liberation, and peace.”

A “symbol of hate” seems like the wrong description.

Why is 5th Avenue ‘New York’s Greatest Street’?

Black Lives Matter has already been painted in large letters down Fulton Street in Brooklyn, on Tryon Street in Charlotte, North Carolina, and on 16th Street NW on the north of Lafayette Square, in Washington D.C.

The President has saved his tweet grenades for this particular project in New York City. Why the attachment to 5th Avenue? Is it really because it is a “luxury Avenue” and the “greatest street in New York”? Or is the President concerned about the effect of the planned Black Lives Matter mural on his Trump Tower on the same avenue?

The President has a real thing for 5th Avenue…

Do you remember when Donald Trump boasted that he could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and not lose any voters? This statement has now been diluted by Trump’s mishandling of the coronavirus pandemic and the President’s botched response to the Black Lives Matter protests.

The Black Lives Matter movement has caused the nation to rally together to combat racism, and address the painful past of slavery — monuments to which are still seen today.

The nation is rallying together to address the issues brought to life by the Black Lives Matter movement. The Pentagon will be removing the names of Confederate slave-owners from its Army bases within one year. Why stop at Army bases?
