The U.S. Commerce Department released new data that shows the damage done by Trump’s trade wars with China. 30 states suffered export losses in the double digits. Some states, like Alabama, lost 49 percent in orders from China.

Product exports across the nation have dropped by 15 percent. Brad Setser, senior fellow for international economics at the Council on Foreign Relations, said to Bloomberg, “In some cases, U.S. exports will never recover.”

None of this bodes well for the Republican party. A new report found that the trade wars cost the GOP five seats in the 2018 midterm elections.

China has also fired back at the U.S. by imposing duties on $135 billion worth of U.S. goods. Declining exports also mean jobs will be cut and salaries will be slashed. These bad effects might carry over into the 2020 election, determining how workers votes.

While China and the U.S. are supposedly in discussions to end the trade wars, nothing is being done about it yet although Chinese Vice Premier Liu He talked with Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer about a “phase one trade deal,” according to CNBC.

China wants a rollback on tariffs, but President Trump does not seem interested, at least, for now. “China would like to get somewhat of a rollback, not a complete rollback because they know I won’t do it,” he told reporters.
