Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn Carter just surpassed the Bush’s to become the longest-married presidential pair.

The Carter’s grew up in the same town, but they didn’t go on their first date until 1945. In her memoir, Rosalynn describes her husband as “the most handsome young man I had ever seen.” Former President Carter says marrying his wife is the “best thing” he ever did.

CNN reports that the wedding almost didn’t happen because Rosalynn rejected Jimmy’s first proposal in order to keep a promise to her father that she would go to college before getting married. Fortunately, that initial rejection didn’t deter the future president.

The pair were married in 1946, and they have been going strong ever since. At the ages of 95 and 92, the couple is still busy building houses for Habitat for Humanity and being a shining example of Presidential integrity.
