Is Lindsey Graham’s seat in play? A major backer just abandoned him and endorsed his opponent

Richard Wilkerson bankrolled Lindsey Graham’s (R-SC) campaigns for nearly a decade, even playing a role in Graham’s abortive 2015 presidential run. But now, as Graham gears up for a reelection fight, his long-time supporter is jumping ship and endorsing Graham’s opponent.

Wilkerson, the former president and CEO of Greenville-based Michelin North America, has endorsed Democrat Jaime Harrison, calling him “the change South Carolina needs,” according to The Post & Courier, the state’s largest newspaper.

While Graham has won past elections by wide margins, he is seen as vulnerable this time around.

Jaime Harrison, the Democrat challenging Graham this fall, raised more money than Graham in the first quarter of 2020 and has set fundraising records for S.C. Democrats.

Wilkerson’s endorsement is just one indication that Harrison is gaining momentum. A poll shows Harrison with a four-point lead over Graham, and the Cook Report, a well-regarded election tracker, no longer see Graham retaining his seat as a sure thing.

Graham has no sympathy for people who lose their jobs

The coronavirus has caused a record number of Americans to file for unemployment, but Graham opposes extending a $600 per week increase in unemployment benefits. Appearing with his fellow S.C. senator, Tim Scott, Graham said extending the increase would pass “over our dead bodies.”

One Twitter user has a simple way to make Graham have some sympathy for unemployed workers — elect Jaime Harrison and put Graham out of a job.

Graham has an answer for workers who want to know if they can stay home from jobs that might expose them to coronavirus: You’re fired — and, no, you can’t receive unemployment benefits.

That will put Graham in an interesting position if, as one Twitter user suggests, he goes to work in a meat-packing plant.

Showing his true colors

Senator Graham has been showing the country exactly what he stands for these past few years…and what he stands for is apparently Donald Trump.

There was a time when he claimed Trump would be the downfall of the GOP:

But since then, he has been Team Trump all the way.

Graham was forced to confront his own words during the Trump impeachment trial, and it sent him running scared.

When it was Bill Clinton in the hot seat, Graham was all for witnesses, calling the obstruction of an impeachment inquiry an impeachable offense. His stance appeared to be quite different when Trump was facing the music.

In one interview, Graham basically admitted that he wouldn’t remain impartial where Trump was concerned. It was a statement that was met with harsh criticism from ex-GOP Representative Joe Scarborough:

“He is actually bragging about the fact that he’s not going to be fair. He seems to take great pride in the fact that he is going to be everything that he hated back when I knew him.”

The popularity of challenger Harrison, may be further proof that Graham’s constituents feel sold out in favor of Trump.

Former Representative and presidential candidate Joe Walsh accused Graham of selling his soul for Trump saying, “Shame on Lindsey Graham.”

The South Carolina senator is so tied to Trump’s success, he has even joked about allowing him to sit for a third term.

It is hard to believe that there was a time when Lindsey Graham called Former Vice President Joe Biden  “as good a man as God ever created.”

That same Lindsey Graham also said Trump was “race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot.”
